What do people think of the many apps designed to help you diet or get fit? Linda Solbrig asked this question to participants in her focus group study. The answer was perhaps surprising: participants said they had the same ‘commitment issues’ (as one described them) with diet and fitness apps as they did with diets or exercise regimes themselves. They found it easy to get started but hard to stay motivated. Apps that sent a lot of notifications or required a lot of user input, for instance to scan barcodes or log exercise sessions, soon became tiresome. Linda’s paper is published in the journal Internet Interventions, and you can access it here.
